PUTRAJAYA: Students will soon find it easier to grasp their lessons when the Tutor Intelligent Learning Management System (iLMS) is introduced. It helps students by offering suitable learning plans determined by psychometric tests.
The smart learning software - developed by Perfisio Solutions Sdn Bhd which is a subsidiary of Utusan Melayu (Malaysia) Bhd and Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) - is based on technology developed by applied-research agency Mimos Bhd.
Tutor iLMS enhances learning experience through cognitive profiling and learning objects. A psychometric test is used to identify a student's multiple learning intelligence and distinguishes a suitable learning style for him or her.
Once a learning style - whether visual, auditory, kinaesthetic or simply read-and-write method - has been determined, the system will churn out unique lesson plans for the student.
Based on their psychometric test results, students will be presented with learning plans that come in the form of text and graphics, or more engaging formats such as multimedia, virtual reality and even augmented reality.
The system includes monitoring features that enable students, parents, teachers and state education departments to track the student's learning performance at various stages.
Utusan group chief executive Tan Sri Mohamed Hashim Ahmad Makaruddin said the system can help students better understand their lessons at school and when they revise their lessons.
"These tailor-made lesson plans will deliver the lessons in a way that the student finds interesting. We can expect them to have a better understanding of a particular topic," he said when launching the system here.
At a press conference afterwards, MARA chairman Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh said students can now have an alternative learning-plan to the one-size-fits-all method used in schools.
He added that test drives to ascertain the effectiveness of the smart learning software had been conducted in the MARA Junior Science College (MRSM) in Merbok, Kedah, for three months starting August last year.
MARA will continue to conduct more test drives in four other MRSM branches and a MARA skills training institute this year.
"Students seem to be happy with the lesson plans that are churned out by the software, but it is too early to tell whether it has helped with the performance in their subjects," Idris said.
Mimos president and chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Wahab Abdullah said Tutor iLMS can be customised to suit the needs of any school.
"The technology is already there and teachers can tweak the features based on their needs. A religious school can add religious subjects to the matrix," he said.
Mara plans to make the software available in all 46 MRSMs nationwide by next year. However, Perfisio plans to wait for the complete findings on the pilot projects before making the software available on a larger scale.
