PUTRAJAYA: A Mara-sponsored student suffered a broken jaw after he was attacked while on his way home from a college at Barking Station in East London on Monday.
Foreign Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman said Mohd Asyraf Haziq, 20, an accountancy student at Kaplan Financial college, lost his wallet, a handphone and bicycle in the attack. He had just arrived in London a month ago.
He was also punched in the face.
Asyraf is expected to undergo surgery for a broken jaw at the Royal London Hospital in Chelsea.
Anifah said no speculation should be made on whether the attack was linked to the riots in North London.
"The student's parents have been informed and Mara officials are at the hospital with him.
"The ministry is also in constant contact with our High Commissioner in London and other officials on the situation there."
Anifah added that the embassy was still investigating whether the attack was related to the riots or a mugging case.
The attack which was filmed and appeared on YouTube and Sky News showed Asyraf first being helped and then robbed of his wallet and mobile phone.
A Facebook set up for Malaysians living in Europe had been inundated with enquiries from concerned friends and was also updated on the events by people who witnessed the incident.
The riots that rocked North London broke out following the shooting death of Mark Duggan, 29, by the police on Thursday in disputed circumstances.
The riots also saw several buildings and vehicles set alight and shops looted after a peaceful demonstration turned violent.
Anifah also cautioned Malaysian students and citizens from going to Birmingham, Liverpool and Bristol.
Asked on evacuation plans if the situation worsened, he said the ministry had taken precautionary measures.
There are approximately 13,600 Malaysian students spread out over the United Kingdom.
High Commissioner Datuk Zakaria Sulong reminded Malaysians to stay away from the hot spots.
