`MARA-sponsored students back home will not return to Egypt'

BANGI (Aug 22, 2013): More than 1,000 Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA)-sponsored students in Egypt who are back home for the holidays will not return to the republic for security reasons.
Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said the government was more concerned with the safety of the students concerned than allowing them to return to the republic to continue with their studies.
"There are places where we can place them and I have asked the MARA director-general to look into it," he told reporters after launching the Merdeka Raya and Fly the Jalur Gemilang campaign here today.
He said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak was also concerned with the students' safety and had suggested at the cabinet meeting yesterday, to look for other places, like in Russia and India.
Meanwhile, he said 192 MARA-sponsored students in Egypt would be brought home under Ops Piramid 2.
A few MARA officers had left for Egypt yesterday to handle the process of bringing the students home, he added.
A total of 420 Malaysian students in Egypt would be brought back to Malaysia in stages through four commercial flights under Ops Piramid 2 today. – Bernama
