JAKARTA: Malaysia defended its gold medal in the SEA Games football after defeating Indonesia 4-3 through penalty shoot outs in the finals held at Gelora Bung Karno stadium on Monday night. Both teams ended the full 90 minutes game tied at 1-1 and had to go into extra time.
Indonesia earlier took the lead with a goal at the 5th minute before Malaysia equalised just before the end of the first half.
The Malaysian under 23 football team will leave for Kuala Lumpur tonight using a special AirAsia flight. In a tweet, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak congratulated the Malaysian team for the win.
"I and all Malaysian are so happy. They have played with high spirit," he said in a tweet.
